By some sort of miracle, Gizmodo was able to get their hands on the next iPhone. That’s right, the next iPhone that is too be released some time later this year, in other words…the iPhone 4g!! Let that sink in a little. This is little bit of electronic magic was to be under extreme security with the utmost effort devoted to keep this nifty gadget top secret. Of course Gizmodo did not break into Apple’s headquarters and steal the iPhone, oh no, that….would be too easy. Instead, rumor has it that Gizmodo had to pay the nice hefty fee of $30,000 to get their hands on this device. The whole schabang started when an Apple employee entrusted with the prototype went to a bar. He then proceeded to get drunk and then left the iPhone sitting on the bar. Gizmodo was then able to pay their way into getting their hands on the new iPhone 4G.

As you can see from the picture, the next gen iPhone has had some aesthetic changes made to it. The camera is to be on the front for rumored video iChat capabilities. The new iPhone is much more rectangularish with less curve as the previous models of iPhones. The new iPhone is now fully black on the front and the back and is a hue of silver on the sides. It is quite hard to tell but it appears to be a tannish silver color. This covers the left, right, top, and bottom, thus effectively removing the bezel that was found on the previous generations of iPhone. There is still only one button on the screen and that is the home button. On the sides, the buttons are the same in function but different in looks. Gone is the volume rocker which I liked so much. Instead the volume buttons are to distinct circular buttons. The vibrate and silent switcher is in the same spot, but it is now square and instead of pivoting, it now slides up and down. The button for power/sleep is still placed on the top as is the headphone input. The speakers and usb connection are still placed at the bottom.

Now improvements over the iPhone 3GS. The new iPhone 4G has two cameras, one in the front as mentioned above, and one on the back like on the previous iPhones. The camera on the back is improved alot, including a bigger lens. The camera will NOW HAVE FLASH! About time. The iPhone 4G will also use Micro SIM instead of the SIM like the iPad. Also, the iPhone 4G will have an improved display with a resolution of a rumored 960×640 which will provide for a crisper display. Finally, the iPhone 4G has two mics, one in the standard area and one near the headphone input in order to provide better noise cancellation. The ipHone 4G is also rumored to have a better battery and smaller components to make up for the bigger battery which will hopefully better battery life than the previous iPhones, and because of this rumored battery upgrade, the weight of the iPhone 4G will be 3 grams heavier than the iPhone 3GS.

All in all, the iPhone 4G looks like a great upgrade that will be definitely worth upgrading two, especially with the new firmware 4.0 coming out. The main two features that are selling points for me besides the software 4.0, are the two cameras for video chatting and the improved battery. However, my thoughts are that because of the leak of the prototype, Apple will probably make a few changes so that the iPhone 4G will provide a little more surprise to consumers now that almost all of its new features and looks have been released all over the internet. Either way, this leak, as bad as it may have been for Apple, provided a very lucky peek at the new iPhone 4G and will definitely be a great product once released in late 2010.

UPDATE: Gizmodo did return the prototype to Apple and enclosed a letter saying “Please go easy on him”. (Referring to the man who left the iPhone at the bar).
